Failing Harddrive

The internal hard-drive on my ibook may be failing...

The 'verify disk' command in 'Disk Utility' is unable to complete, so I booted into Single User Mode, and ran fsck -yf. This completed without problems. I then booted back in and tried to 'verify disk' again. No dice.

Is my hard-drive failing? Yikes! No AppleCare!

Firefox 1.5

One of the reasons I do not choose to use Firefox on my mac is that it seems to take forever to start-up. However, I just downloaded Firefox 1.5 and it seems to start-up about a million times faster.

I will probably not switch from Safari though, as I have gotten so used to Safari's key bindings...

Lady in the WHAT????

Okay, M. Night. Shamahooligan is at it again.
The trailer for this move "Lady in the Water" is watchable from
Apple's quicktime site or when you see Harry Potter.

The Sixth Sense was a great movie.
Unbreakable was a great concept.
Signs was the key indicator of where Night's career was heading.
The Village was unbearable.

I am somewhat amazed that they are allowing him to write and direct another movie.
maybe direct.....but write.

Game 11 Versus Deuce

We lost 2-nil to this team the last time around; I think it was our second game. Anyhow, this morning we corrected the record by taking Deuce down.

It was an extremely physical game- they have a lot of eager, young bruisers on their squad, and they play smart football. We faced a stiff wind during the first half, and it was all we could do to keep their attack at bay; thankfully they did not really have any real chances, but because of the wind and the speed of their strikers, they always seemed to be threatening to to break through our line. It was hard and stressful work.

But our defence is solid- we play a 4 man configuration, with a stopper and a sweeper. Our principal defenders are the fastest guys on the squad, which makes the difference on a day like today when we are being bombarded by through-balls, and long-balls...

In fact it was the speed and experience of our star sweeper Nate that both saved and almost doomed us:

It was early in the first half and Deuce was on the attack; they brought the ball down the left side and about 20 yards outside of the box they crossed it over; my right halfback was (thankfully) marking his man and he had position to block the ball. But inexplicably he totally whiffed the stop and in a split second the attacker was past our line- it seemed like a sure thing, but then Nate comes flying through and performs a brilliant tackle, sweeping the ball into the corner and taking the unhappy striker down. It really was a clean tackle, a great tackle, but the ref (who made a series of bad calls the entire game, both for and against us) called penalty kick...

It was horrible. I thought that it was going to be sure goal; not only did the striker have a solid shot, but he had the wind at his back; it was a perfect set up...

But our goalie is awesome and he guessed right, diving to his right to smother the low-burn strike...

It was a great save and inspired by this, the momentum swung in our favor. We contained them for the rest of the half, and went into the second-half full of fire and with the wind at our back. We scored a sweet cleanup goal off a free-kick in the 60th minute and again in the 85th minute off brilliant right side run...

Man it felt good to win today.

In Case You Were Wondering

The world record for longest skid on a bicycle is 337 feet, 6 inches. It has its own web site.

And if you want to try to break this record, remember that you must wear a helmet.

Waiting for the roofer

About a week ago Carol came into the office and said, "What's that?" I follow her finger to the quarter-sized moldy wet spot on the ceiling about a foot from the from the wall. Oh hell, i thought to myself. Some of you might remember the trouble we had right after adolfo iv was born in our apartment on McDuffie st: the roof in our bedroom collapsed after a hot water pipe burst in the ceiling at about 2 a.m. Luckily, carol heard it and woke me up. She got Adolfo out of the room and I was able to get our bed out of the room before the giant sheetrock bubble in the ceiling burst nearly over our bed.

I put my finger to it - it was dry. (There hasn't been rain here for weeks. When did this happen?)

It's position was telling, it was no where near the a/c in the attic, so it wasn't from that. Are there pipes up there? I had never seen any. I took my Craftsman flashlight into the attic and inspected the plywood and beams and found what looked to me like a drip spot.

Could i have gotten shingle damage from Rita? I called my insurance company who suggested i call a roofer first to have them inspect the damage and then call them back.

He's late. Louis, where are you?

Doooooo the right thing!!!!!

This Post is dedicated to Elizabeth.
So there I am in Savannah.
In the Executive Suite, with is built in library.
Several bookshelves filled with tom clancy novels, "the celestine prophecy", and other bargain basement novels
interior decorators buy in bulk to fill out in-home and commercial libraries.
(yes they do this because people who make enough money to hire interior decorators dont
have time to read fiction)
I see a book on the shelf.
It says "The Orchard Keeper".
It has a Green Hardback cover.
I like Cormac McCarthy novels.
I know that it is his first novel.
I pick it up and go straight to the edition page.
It is a First Edition.
I put the book back on the shelf and suppress all of my inner desire
and think what a Riddle would do. Be a Riddle.
I got home Thursday and waited till Sunday and got online and looked it up.
Depending on it's condition without it's dustjacket it's worth is between 650 to 1000 dollars.
I called the Hotel's sales director today and told them to retreive it.
I did the right thing. Outright. I didnt cave into the grey-ness of it all.
About how no-one would miss it.
How theft of an item from a large bussiness that has no percieved value of something in
it's possession is not grand-theft.(At least in my head)
It's paramount to walking into a starbucks and seeing a Matisse (a small one is worth about 1,000) sketch hanging in the bathroom and Starbucks not knowing what it had.
knowing what it had.
I cant deny I had the thoughts.
Obviously.
But I did the right thing.
and I owe it to my wife, she makes me a good man.

Aethiopia

One of the nice things about having an office downtown that faces Congress, is that you get great seats for the many parades and protests that pass by.

A couple of days ago we were witness to a well organized march by several hundred Ethiopian-Americans, Ethiopian expatriates and other supporters, who sought to bring attention to the crisis that is developing in Ethiopia. The march was co-ordinated with similar protests in other cities around the globe...

Game 10 Versus Cameron Road United

Our very first game of the season was against these guys, and we played them to a nil-nil tie. It was a pretty frustrating game, as I recall, filled with all sorts of kick-ball and sliding around, the kind of game played by a disorganized squad.

Today's game could not have been any more different. We started the game with only 7 men, but 10 minutes later our side was up to full strength, The other team scored first, but we quickly answered with a pretty nice equalizer. From there, we went on to dominate the first-half, going up 4-1. I even had several break-away shots on goal, all really weak ones. I really need to learn how to kick the ball...

The second half of the game was much more interesting and difficult. CRU really turned their game up a notch and generated plenty of good chances. They scored on a really fantastic counter-attack, and for little why even though they were down by 2 goals it seemed as if they might be able to come back.

But their hopes were crushed in the latter part of the half as we put in another sweet goal to finish the game at 5-2.

Hey Killy, I got i-net access this afternoon and thought I sent an email but it turns out it doesn't let me connect to an smtp server or something, so this is the link. If any Flash jockeys out there want to see someone learning how to use flash to draw, check out the .as file. I'll give you a call when I get back to discuss.

Blog...with these hands...?

Hi all,

First post in a long time.
It is good to see Paul finally has an outlet with this blog thing.
Look at all those posts.

I like hearing about the soccer games, I can't play right now, my knees are way out of comission.
They have always given my low grade trouble, complaning if I don't really stretch out, always having some sort of comment on all my activities. But was in a game about a month ago and I had to walk out in the middle, I knew something was not right. Been putting off going to the doc.

The Snow is starting to fall on the mountain, they opened a couple of runs at one of the resorts this last weekend, I don't know if my knees will permit me to make it up there this year.

I just posted some of Laura's etchings to my flicker account. go take a look at them and send her an email.

Lunulius@coho.net

The girls are getting bigger, 6 and 13. I will send some photos soon.

How do you know where to find the Uploader, so I don't have to ask eack time I want to use it. Where is it kept?
Is it like the Rancor, kept in Jaba's basement only allowed out to devoure the technolgically un-savvy.

blagh blagh blagh

Diana is now (officially) a PA-C!

after a whole week of low level freak out she got the results of her big PA test and she passed! i know that comes to no surprise to anyone but her, it just seems important to tell everyone.

and if everyone could send me a current vCard i would be very grateful. Mark lost his blackberry in Mexico and a lot of contact info along with it and has asked me to help him rebuild a small part of his vast network of freinds, associates, cronies, henchmen and the like.

East Austin Studio Tour

I came across a brochure (they are getting fancy!) for this year's East Austin Studio Tour.

This event is always great fun, especially if you do the tour Gob style on your segway.

I would even go as far as to say that it is worth the trip up from Houston to check it out...

I am not happy with how the vote turned out

Savannah

I can see why so many people think this city is wonderfull.
Parks.
There is a park every 4 blocks.
IN EVERY DIRECTION.
Proximity to water. Beach.
Southern Hospitality.
I am glad that I have seen it because I dont think I will be back here before I am 60.
There is a pretty cool school here.
Savannah College of Art and Design.
S.C.A.D.
Top six in the nation.
However the city is predominatley made up of old people.

UPDATE: This is probly the most beautifull city I have walked in after dark.
And I mean the city. San Fran's building and streets are enhanced by the hills and fog,
Savannah's parks and streets are well lit, (sort of like Guanajuato's). And their buildings are very pretty.
The dark has put to bed the older population and it seems the ART students have come out of the woodwork.
I think this would be a great place for you Pablo....Judging from what was in the coffee shop (Gallery Espresso).

productive weekend

so i cleaned up my hard drives for a reeeeeally long time this weekend. important and frustrating work that i feel better for having done. While the space savings and general increase of tidyness is pretty overwhelming, i only did my two client folders (piston and starepod clients do not mix. think sheep and cattle, or oil and water). next up is my fonts folder. then on to my personal stuff.

and, hi! long time no post.

Game 9 Versus Babaganoutch

I woke up Sunday morning with horrible sinus pressure and a 9.3 on the Richter scale headache. Were allergies the cause? Was it a cold? Was it my old enemy, the Todd Mold?

The game was not until 11:50 against our chief rival, Babaganoutch. I felt so crappy that I was not sure that I was going to be able to play effectively. So I just laid around and whimpered all morning, bemoaning my fate, something I am really good at, and enjoy.

By game time, amazingly, I felt ok. Maybe it was the 18 Advil I swallowed or maybe it was the freakish 90 degree temperature outside, but by the time I got out to Pflugerville, I was feeling pretty good.

And I am glad that I felt ok because the game was super tough. Babaganoutch is the team in our division that seems to have all of the big dudes on it. They had big dudes up in the front, and big dudes in the back, and big dudes in the middle. Even their goalie was this big dude. Anyhow, I played right full-back and we had a heck of a time containing their attack...

They scored first, maybe in the 25th or 30th minute. Their center-forward type guy (who is kind of a big dude, but not that big) made a sweet turn to beat our sweeper and then went in to high gear and zoomed towards the goal and put in a fantastic far post strike.

I think this goal kind of shook our team up a bit, because in the second half we started to play a lot tougher, and by the 60th minute or so we managed to equalize...

The game swung back and forth for the next 20 minutes or so. We managed to have quite a few more chances on goal, but their goalie did a great job of frustrating our offense...

Then, something strange happened. I am not sure how, or why, but somehow I found myself right in front of the goal, running on to a sweet through-ball from our center-mid. I only needed only 2 more steps to strike the ball...

I could see a defender on my left, I had him clearly beat. I could see the goalie on my right, he was out of position to stop a left post strike...

I was one step away from the ball.

I stepped.

And then the world started spinning. I felt my self fly through the air like 7-Eleven coffee cup flung out the window of an 18 wheeler doing 70 down I-35.

I landed and rolled and rolled and rolled and rolled and rolled and rolled.

What happened? I have no idea. But everyone started yelling and the referee started blowing his whistle and our team was awarded a penalty-kick.

Mike our star forward took the kick and we held on to win the game 2-1.

So my 20 year scoreless drought continues. But each game I seem to get a step (or two) closer.

So with this win we maintain our number one position in the table, with 6 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie. The most amazing statistic is that in 9 games we have only allowed 5 goals.

Yahoo Maps Beta Is Pretty Sweet!

I was checking out the beta version of Yahoo! Maps. It is pretty slick! It seems to run more smoothly than Google Maps (probably because it is powered by Flash, not DHTML), plus, you can set up multi-point routes, which is fantastic. Check out my typical Tuesday/Thursday:

Also, Yahoo! has exposed all sorts of sweet apis, including a Geocoding API, that allows you to find the longitude and latitude for an address, and a fancy ActionScript-Flash API for using Flash to interact with Yahoo! Maps

D200

I am mostly posting this for Killy who has been salivating over buying a digital camera for some time now.
The D200 was finally announced by nikon today.
Hooray.
Killy take a loan out on your non-focusing eye and buy it.

http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25235

Industry-leading image processing for exceptional color performance: Incorporates Nikon's industry-leading advanced imaging processing engine of the D2x, which allows color-independent pre-conditioning prior to A/D conversion to work in symphony with advanced digital image processing algorithms to achieve fine color gradations with exceptionally smooth, consistent transitions.
I am not saying that canon isnt guilty of the same kinds of statements.
But if everybody makes them.....do they actually mean anything.?????
