This Post is dedicated to Elizabeth.
So there I am in Savannah.
In the Executive Suite, with is built in library.
Several bookshelves filled with tom clancy novels, "the celestine prophecy", and other bargain basement novels
interior decorators buy in bulk to fill out in-home and commercial libraries.
(yes they do this because people who make enough money to hire interior decorators dont
have time to read fiction)
I see a book on the shelf.
It says "The Orchard Keeper".
It has a Green Hardback cover.
I like Cormac McCarthy novels.
I know that it is his first novel.
I pick it up and go straight to the edition page.
It is a First Edition.
I put the book back on the shelf and suppress all of my inner desire
and think what a Riddle would do. Be a Riddle.
I got home Thursday and waited till Sunday and got online and looked it up.
Depending on it's condition without it's dustjacket it's worth is between 650 to 1000 dollars.
I called the Hotel's sales director today and told them to retreive it.
I did the right thing. Outright. I didnt cave into the grey-ness of it all.
About how no-one would miss it.
How theft of an item from a large bussiness that has no percieved value of something in
it's possession is not grand-theft.(At least in my head)
It's paramount to walking into a starbucks and seeing a Matisse (a small one is worth about 1,000) sketch hanging in the bathroom and Starbucks not knowing what it had.
knowing what it had.
I cant deny I had the thoughts.
Obviously.
But I did the right thing.
and I owe it to my wife, she makes me a good man.
