Legends of the Stallman

For personal reasons, I do not browse the web from my computer. (I
also have not net connection much of the time.) To look at page I
send mail to a demon which runs wget and mails the page back to me.
It is very efficient use of my time, but it is slow in real time.

Gone To Texas

Hey folks I have moved back to Austin. I have let a place at the same apartment complex that I lived in before. In fact, my new place is just below and to the right of where the Taggarts and where the Todd used to live…

It is a cold 40 degrees here but it is a warm welcome nevertheless given that was 20 degrees in D.C. when I left…

We Made It!

Well, we made it, despite southern California trying to kill us. I skipped the Saturday/Sunday installment because Saturday sucked, and we crashed pretty early on Sunday.

Today was a nice drive through the mountains in northern California/southern Oregon. It is bloody well freezing here in Portland. We are snug and warm in World Cup Coffee, about half an hour away from seeing Diana's new apartment for the first time. The wait is not caused by distance, but by the fact that the manager-lady will not be home 'til 5:30.

That's it, hope everyone is well.

Sloth in the trash can

I went to a birthday party with Chella. It was at the local zoo in Lafayette IN.
There was going to be some meet and greet with the animals so I was excited.
They showed us a barn owl and a chinchilla and an umbrella bird. But what took the cake (not literally) was when they went over to a large gray industrial trash can in the corner, wheeled it out into the center of the room and opened it. Across the inside lid were two metal bars and attached to those metal bars were four hairy arms. At this point everything was getting completely surreal. They kept raising the lid and, sure enough, they pulled out a sloth about as long as the can was deep.

Well they pulled him out and put him on a tree/perch and did their talk. After that they got him to grab back onto the lid and lowered him into the can. The kids didn't seem too puzzled but I was almost terrified. It reminded me a bit too much of Pulp Fictions gimp scene, without all the associated action.

Small town zoos.
Weird.

Houston to El Paso

We left Houston dark and early this morning around 6:00. We drove and drove and drove. Little did we know that misfortune lay across our path.

Approx. 30 miles east of Van Horn, Texas we had a blowout. Pretty benign as these things go, but we were still stuck in the god-forsaken wilderness that is West Texas.

Luckily, the cells worked and our fingers walked us out of the desert and into Van Horn, specifically the Shell station with a mechanic, a tire of the correct size, and a crazy 30-something woman in a white Suzuki mini-suv talking to herself loudly and angrily.

We hit the road again with just over two hours lost and made it into El Paso, where I am currently creating this message. Turns out that El Paso is a huge, garish blight upon the land. Who knew?

interesting browser type thing

http://www.stumbleupon.com/

Using their interface....you click on the stumble button and it randomly pulls up pages, I think that the other users have added to the list of sites.

I mention it because a lot of the sites have been really cool.

The design ones have been quite compelling, for example:

http://www.zerohouse.net/ When I can afford it, we are getting one and moving in.

http://yugop.com/ this one is just a really great design site with great interaction.

They have a toolbar that can be added to your browser so you can use the stumble option any time.

Take the Houston Current Events Quiz!

Slampo's Place: “They’ll Hunt Me Down and Hang Me for My Crimes, When I Tell About My Dirty Life and Times”:
6.) According to Roger Clemens, over the years Roger Clemens has been given many injections of painkillers and Vitamin B12 in the buttocks by

B. “A faded, jaded junkie nurse …”
C. “Dr. Sam Siegler”
D. “… trainers, nurses, doctors ...”

Off the Kuff: Oh, those emails
I didn't intend for it to be offensive. I didn't e-mail anybody that I thought would be offended by it.

Occifer, I didn't intend to speed. I wasn't speeding where I thought there would be any cops!
